WINS For Life wishes you a Happy Veteran’s Day!
For a country founded on principals of freedom, Veteran’s Day is a significant American holiday. In 1918, on the 11th of November, World War I came to an end when Germany signed the Armistice, an order issued to cease all firing. Most of the world rejoiced on that November 11th ; weapons were disarmed, work was suspended, and spontaneous celebrations & parades replaced war. Armistice Day officially became a national holiday in 1938 when Congress passed a bill stating that each November 11 "shall be dedicated to the cause of world peace and...here after celebrated and known as Armistice Day." On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
There are so many people to show gratitude towards, on any given day. Veterans Day is THE DAY for Americans to unite and demonstrate our appreciation for the countless American heroes who bravely contributed to our most prized possession: freedom. A colorful favorite was Lt. Gen. Lewis "Chesty" Puller, a United States Marine Corps Hero. Puller served honorably in World War II, most notable is when his 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment took a brave stand on Guadalcanal in 1942. While battling serious disadvantages, his Marines defied incredible odds and successfully defended the strategic Henderson Airfield. Puller’s troops killed 1,400 Japanese soldiers, while suffering less than 70 casualties. He later led Pendleton's 1st Regiment into Inchon, Korea. When Pendleton's 1st Division was surrounded by more than 100,000 Chinese soldiers, Puller, with his unwavering bravado and gung ho optimism, altered reality by fueling the troops for victory, he exclaimed: "They're on our right, they're on our left, they're in front of us, the are behind us. They can't get away from us this time!" It is this bravery and commitment that we honor today.

During 2005, far too many Americans have been harshly and abruptly branded a new experience in life: victim. Americans seem to enjoy identity. We belong to many things. Yet, nobody wants to belong to any group known as: “The unfortunate victims of natural catastrophes and tragic events.” Although free, membership to this group is unbearably costly. Ironically, another universal organization called volunteers is also free, yet this membership is completely rewarding! Volunteering reminds me of a favorite quote: “Action is the antidote to despair.” Since most of us have two hands, it is important that we are willing to offer at least one of them during a time of need. Action is where it’s at! volunteering is an easy and fun hobby: 1) Find a cause. 2.) “Blame nobody. Expect nothing. Do something.” There are many “angels on earth.” Regardless of whether they have wings or not, these “angels” take action to benefit others. They take action by doing Acts of Kindness (AOK’s). You could say it’s cool to volunteer. It’s AOK! |
